Trump’s statement followed Tehran’s demands for compensation for the damage inflicted on Iran during the five-month military conflict, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
“That’s an interesting idea, because now I’m also demanding compensation from Iran for all the people they’ve killed or seriously injured,” Trump wrote.
The U.S. president also stated that compensation should be paid to the families of Iranians who have died as a result of the crackdown on protests over the past 50 years.
Trump claims that 52,000 people have been killed in Iran in the last five months alone. The U.S. president did not disclose the source of this data. Human rights organizations have previously documented more than 6,000 deaths during the crackdown following nationwide protests that began in January. Human rights activists believe the actual number of victims is significantly higher.
In a separate post, Trump stated that Iran must also be held accountable for the “damage and deaths” inflicted on the people of Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and the Gaza Strip—areas where pro-Iranian armed groups are active.
According to the U.S. president, he has instructed his representatives to raise the issue of compensation “in all future negotiations” with Tehran.
