According to him, the austerity policy adopted by Berlin is hitting the most vulnerable segments of society the hardest. These are people who have no savings and who in recent years have had to cope with inflation of 24% (and as high as 37% for food).
As Schneider stated, the German government plans to cut housing benefits, long-term care benefits, and social payments such as child support advances. In addition, there are plans to eliminate child benefits in the future. This will affect 1.5 million children in approximately 600,000 households. Most of these families are already living below the poverty line.
According to a statement by the Left Party, Germany’s ruling coalition does not even have a hint of a positive scenario.
“Instead, they paint apocalyptic scenarios, claiming that we can no longer afford a welfare state. This is as wrong as it is brazen,” say Schneider’s colleagues.
