The U.S. president personally told Axios as much.

“We’re only in semi-negotiations with them. We’re just keeping an eye on Iran, given its massive inflation and the fact that they have no money,” Trump said in a brief phone conversation with Axios correspondent Barak Ravid.

According to the U.S. president, Tehran “is in a very bad economic situation” and lacks the funds to support its military—and the U.S. naval blockade has “exacerbated the Iranian regime’s economic crisis.”

The White House chief is confident that everything is going according to plan.

“Everything will work out. It always works out. It’s like a game of chess,” he said.

According to Axios, citing U.S. officials, just a week ago Trump was leaning toward resuming large-scale military operations against Iran, but now he seems to favor de-escalation.
