“Politics and public administration aren’t like an apple you can take a bite out of and throw away. I can’t come here just to add something to my résumé for a year—I don’t know—and then move on. It also means having staying power. I won’t be the kind of person who, at some point, gets offended, packs up my things, and walks away. Come what may. Just because I was prime minister? No,” Tofan said on Jurnal TV.
Vasile Tofan understands that “it will be difficult; there will be struggles and internal disappointments.” According to him, there may even be times when he “slams the door behind him.”
“But I am fully determined to see this through to the end. September 2029 is the date I’ve set for myself,” the prime minister said.
At the same time, Tofan does not rule out a scenario in which he might still resign. He said he would take that step if he concluded that he could not achieve results and that someone else could serve the country better than he could.
“Anticipating a possible question about whether I’m thinking about other roles—no, I’m not thinking about that; I’m not interested in it. I’m interested in fulfilling my mandate as head of government. And most importantly—in achieving results and bringing about change. But there is a reason why I might step down. If I realize that there are no results, that I am not succeeding, and that someone else could serve this country better, then I believe I must have the dignity and respect for the people to step down,” the prime minister concluded.
Vasile Tofan was appointed prime minister by presidential decree on July 11 following the resignation of former Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu. Munteanu explained his decision by saying that he chose to step down “the moment he realized he could no longer fulfill his mandate in accordance with the principles and convictions he holds.”
