“Truth, in the academic sense, is not merely a declaration or a formula tailored to political or social circumstances. It is the result of rigorous research, verifiable arguments, critical thinking, and intellectual integrity,” reads the anniversary message from Academician Ion Tighineanu, President of the National Academy of Sciences.
The Academy’s leadership emphasizes that, in addition to research activities, the institution represents a space of national responsibility where “scientific truth must underpin responsible decisions.”
“But Truth is not limited to the scientific dimension alone. It also encompasses the truth of identity, the truth about the language, culture, and memory of the people. In this sense, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova has played a fundamental role in defending and affirming the truth about our cultural and linguistic identity. For decades, the academic community has shown courage and consistency in defending the correct name of the Romanian language and in promoting the cultural values that define our spiritual space,” notes Tighineanu.
According to him, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova is not merely an institution of symbolic representation, but a “space of national responsibility.”
“In this sense, the slogan ‘The Academy of Sciences of Moldova—an institution of Truth and a champion of authentic values’ expresses a profound reality. The Academy of Sciences of Moldova is such an institution because it promotes verified knowledge, scientific arguments, evidence-based policy, and intellectual integrity. It acts as a champion of authentic values because it defends the Romanian language, national culture, historical memory, dialogue with the Romanian Academy, the unity of the Romanian cultural space, and the European integration of the Republic of Moldova through education, science, and culture,” the article published in “Literatura și Arta” notes.
Tighinanu notes that the Academy of Sciences of Moldova is “an important link in the Romanian Academic Council, and the convening of the next meeting in Chișinău on June 22 of this year confirms the role of the ASM in consolidating the Romanian academic space”.
The ASM was officially inaugurated on August 2, 1961. Its scientific foundation had been laid earlier: the first academic centers and research institutes were established on June 12, 1946.
