The level of Moldova’s self-sufficiency in products is uneven

According to the press release of the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2024 the country covered domestic consumption at the expense of its own production: for fruits, berries and nuts – 1.7 times; for cereals (excluding legumes) – 1.5 times. At the same time, the level of self-sufficiency in a number of basic food products was insufficient, in particular, in vegetables – 85%, meat – 79%, milk – 60%, potatoes – 55%.

The level of self-sufficiency in key foodstuffs is not always appropriately reflected in consumer preferences. The average annual per capita consumption in 2024 increased in the following categories of products: potatoes – 79.3 kg (9% increase compared to 2023); fruits, berries and nuts – 140.8 kg (+8%); milk – 188.0 kg (+8%); meat – 68.6 kg (+5%); vegetables – 115.8 kg (+1%). Decrease in consumption was recorded in such product categories as cereals – up to 187.9 kg (-4%) and melons – up to 14.0 kg (-4%).

Interestingly, consumption increased mainly for some mass imported (milk, meat, potatoes) products, while the decrease in consumption – for cereals dominating in agricultural exports.
