Portuguese economist Ricardo Reisch has reportedly been ruled out of the race for the post of chief economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after criticising Donald Trump’s trade tariffs.
According to the Financial Times, as cited by Euronews, he was being considered for the post, but the IMF withdrew his candidacy after reviewing the professor’s views on US trade policy.
Meanwhile, in July, the IMF ultimately appointed Silvana Tenreiro, a former senior official at the Bank of England and lecturer at the London School of Economics, to the post.
According to sources cited by the British newspaper, Silvana Tenreira also believes that tariffs are detrimental to economic growth; however, her criticism of the Trump administration was less harsh than that of the Portuguese economist.
Ricardo Reisch declined to comment on this information or make any statements to the Financial Times.
This incident is unfolding against a backdrop of pressure from the Trump administration on economists who criticise US tariffs.
The IMF declined to comment on the selection process, citing confidentiality, and stated that the choice had been “thorough and competitive”.
