The economy has stalled: half-yearly GDP growth stands at 0.6 per cent

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is today publishing an official flash estimate of GDP for the second quarter and the first half of 2026, according to which a persistent stagnation in economic growth has become apparent.

At the end of the first half of the year, gross domestic product growth reached a modest 0.6 per cent in real terms: 0.4 per cent in the first quarter and 0.9 per cent in the second.

According to the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), industrial production, agricultural activity, the energy sector, trade and financial activities made a positive contribution to GDP growth in the second quarter (+0.9 per cent).

GDP growth in the second quarter was held back by the ICT sector, construction, education, transport and other services, where gross value added fell to varying degrees.

Overall, in the first half of 2026, the total volume of gross value added in the economy, in real terms, remained at the same level as in the first half of 2025.
