The project is still at an early stage of development: the name of the picture, cast and release date is not disclosed. According to Welt, shooting may start as early as 2027, and the premiere is expected in 2028.
The script Gavras writes with Simon Jacquet and Mourad Winter. The basis for the film will also become the basis for the book-investigation “Main basse sur le Louvre”, published on May 27, 2026 by Flammarion. Its authors – journalists Jean-Michel Decugis, Jérémie Fam-Le and Nicolas-Charles Torrent – reconstructed the events of the robbery based on the materials of the judicial investigation and the testimonies of those involved in the case.
From the outset, the story went far beyond the criminal record. Already in the first hours after the attack, social networks were flooded with memes, video montages and comparisons to iconic heist movies, from Ocean’s Eleven to stories about Lupin and The Pink Panther.
The crime quickly became an element of mass culture, and the robbers themselves became heroes of Internet folklore even before the investigation was completed.
According to the investigation, a group of attackers penetrated the Louvre in broad daylight, using construction equipment and disguises. In a matter of minutes, they smashed the jewelry showcases and fled on scooters in the center of Paris.
The booty of the criminals were eight royal jewelry with a total value of about 90 million euros. Among the stolen items were jewelry associated with the French monarchy, including items that belonged to Empress Eugenie. During the escape, one of the crowns fell on the sidewalk and was found damaged.
Despite a series of arrests by French investigators, most of the jewelry has yet to be recovered. It is this unsolved part of the story that continues to fuel interest in the case and makes it perfect material for a great movie.
The future movie is already being called one of the most anticipated European projects of the coming years. The real-life crime story, which has become part of popular culture, and the participation of Romain Gavras, known for his intense visual style, have already secured the project international attention even before filming begins.
