At the parliamentary meeting, MP Elena Hritco said that Moldova is facing an alarming increase in the number of telephone and online frauds, the scale of which has reached critical levels in recent months.
Official data confirm the seriousness of the situation: the damage caused to citizens by online fraud exceeded 270 million lei in 2025, which is almost twice as much as in the previous period. In addition, only during one weekend in May 2026, 29 cases were registered with a damage of more than 6 million lei.
In this context, the Our Party faction officially demanded the creation of a parliamentary investigative commission to find out why the fraud networks are flourishing. At the same time, PSRM reiterated its demand for an urgent hearing of the Minister of Interior to explain the inefficiency of the current mechanisms of crime prevention.
The Commission of Inquiry aims to comprehensively assess the scale of the phenomenon, analyze the damage and identify legislative flaws that allowed criminals to operate virtually unhindered. The commission’s tasks include verifying the effectiveness of cooperation between law enforcement agencies, financial institutions and telecommunications operators, as well as assessing the speed of the authorities’ response to victims’ reports. The commission will also examine the possible involvement of transnational criminal groups and vulnerabilities in the protection of personal data.
Within 30 days, the commission is to submit a final report with specific proposals for improving criminal legislation and implementing mechanisms for promptly blocking suspicious transactions.
Lilian Karp, who heads the Standing Committee on National Security, Defense and Public Order, was appointed chairman of the commission.
It should be recalled that on June 12, the Parliament will organize public hearings to find concrete solutions to combat phone and online fraud. The main goal of these debates is to assess the current situation in the field of cybercrime, analyze the measures already taken by the authorities to protect citizens and identify more effective mechanisms to prevent such offenses.
