This figure is more than 23 million lei higher than in the same period of 2025. Currently, the compulsory health insurance scheme (AOAM) reimburses 34 international non-proprietary names (INNs) of medicines for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. These account for more than half of total expenditure on reimbursed medicines.

However, funding for cardiovascular treatment is not limited to medicines. In the first half of the year, the National Health Insurance Fund (CNAM) allocated approximately 219 million lei for over 3,600 cardiovascular surgical procedures, including around 2,600 minimally invasive procedures carried out in cases of acute myocardial infarction.

A further 13 million lei were allocated for over 260 cases under the ‘Electrophysiological Study and Ablations’ programme, which enables the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. This sum also includes the cost of the consumables required for these procedures.

Also in the first six months of the year, AOAM funds were used to finance over 28,000 high-performance medical services for the diagnosis of cardiac conditions, amounting to 25.7 million lei.

The figures were presented by the CNAM to mark World Heart Day, observed on 29 September. This year, the campaign is running under the slogan ‘Every heartbeat counts’ and emphasises the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the recognition of their symptoms.

The CNAM states that prevention involves monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, eating a balanced diet, taking regular exercise and giving up smoking. Chest pain or discomfort, difficulty breathing, dizziness or sudden weakness require medical attention.
