Opinion: local reform will accelerate depopulation of villages

Dumitru Roibu said that the local government reform strategy contains provisions that could accelerate the depopulation of villages and the degradation of social infrastructure in rural areas.

“The moment a school, town hall, health center, kindergarten and other public services leave a village, that village starts to die,” he said. – Property values drop, people don’t want to stay there, and no one comes to invest or live in that community anymore.”

Houses of culture in villages

At the same time, he drew attention to the strategy’s provisions for closing or converting houses of culture in villages.

“The public administration reform strategy adopted by the government in 2023 states that some houses of culture should be closed or transformed into other institutions. But these buildings were built by people, whole generations, who worked to bring cultural life and community to the village.

– It also says that other social facilities in the village may disappear. On the other hand, the authorities say they will only close the town hall. This creates ambiguities.”

Dumitru Roibu emphasized that the lack of clear explanations and concrete examples of the application of the reform fuels mistrust among citizens.
