The Union of Mediators of the Republic of Moldova was established during the profession’s first General Assembly, organised by the Ministry of Justice.
At the opening of the event, the Minister of Justice, Vladislav Kozhukhar, described this stage as one of ‘institutional maturity’, which would contribute to the development of the profession and increase public confidence in the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
‘Mediation complements the judicial system and offers citizens and legal entities an alternative means of conflict resolution based on dialogue, mutual understanding and responsibility. At the same time, the courts remain the guarantor of the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms. These two mechanisms must complement one another to ensure effective access to justice, the fair and timely resolution of disputes, and to strengthen public confidence. We are committed to working together to foster a culture of peaceful conflict resolution, whilst respecting the right of access to justice and prioritising the interests of citizens,” said the Minister of Justice.
The establishment of the Union is important for mediators, citizens and the entire justice system alike. The organisation will represent the legitimate interests of its members, support continuous professional development and uphold professional ethics. For citizens and the business community, mediation will offer a faster, more flexible and less costly solution than court proceedings. At the same time, the use of this procedure will help to reduce the number of disputes reaching the courts.
The Minister emphasised that professional autonomy also entails obligations towards society. “Self-governance means rights and autonomy, as well as responsibility, transparency and reliable mechanisms for professional accountability. The public interest must remain a priority,” stressed Vladislav Kozhukhar.
In the Republic of Moldova, there are approximately 150–200 officially registered and practising authorised professional mediators. The activities of mediators and the registration of their offices are regulated by the Mediation Council under the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova.
