Moldova was left without Ukrainian rebar and wire

The Ukrainian steel industry has faced a sharp decline in exports of long steel products. In September 2026, companies exported just 19,300 tonnes of products – 81 per cent less than in the same month last year. Over the first nine months, exports fell by more than half, whilst the steel industry’s foreign exchange earnings decreased by 46 per cent. Suppliers of wire rod and reinforcing bars suffered the greatest losses.

This is evidenced by calculations from GMK Center, published on 21 October based on data from the State Customs Service of Ukraine.

Whilst Poland, Lithuania and Romania are the main consumers of wire rod, the fall in rebar exports directly affects Moldova.

In September, shipments of this product totalled 5,1 thousand tonnes. This is 35 per cent less than in August and 86 per cent less than in September last year.

Between January and September, Ukraine exported 108,5 thousand tonnes of rebar, a 58 per cent year-on-year decline. Poland remained the main buyer, receiving 70 thousand tonnes. A further 29 thousand tonnes were supplied to Moldova, and around 4 thousand tonnes to Lithuania.

Meanwhile, exports of non-alloy steel wire fell by 29 per cent over the nine-month period, to 69,000 tonnes. The main markets for this product were Poland, Germany and Moldova.
