Thereformin Latvia took place in two stages
Latvia has gone through two major stages of local governance reorganization: in 2009 and in 2020. Currently, the average population of one administrative-territorial unit in this country is about 41 thousand people.
Government Secretary General Alexei Buzu emphasized the importance of strengthening the capacity of local authorities in the context of Moldova’s European course.
“Latvia’s experience is relevant for Moldova in the context of administrative reform and European integration,” Alexei Buzu said. – Strengthening the mayoralties and building the capacity of their teams is an important condition for taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the European funds”.
The representatives of Latvian local authorities, in their turn, noted that strong, well-organized mayoralties with sufficient administrative resources can bring communities to a new level of development through the effective use of EU funds.
At the same time, the need to develop road, transport and service infrastructure necessary for successful implementation of the local government reform was emphasized.
In Moldova, the authorities are currently implementing a large-scale reform of local administrations. An important part of it is the voluntary unification of mayoralties.
According to the State Chancellery, as of today 512 decisions have been taken to initiate the process of voluntary unification.
