According to the Energy Department, the discussions also focused on current challenges in the energy sector, including the impact of infrastructure attacks and the need to improve system resilience.

EU helps prepare for winter

The minister noted that Moldova has finalized a summer preparation plan for the upcoming 2026-2027 winter season in cooperation with European institutions, and that the authorities remain vigilant in the face of persistent risks. At the same time, he emphasized the progress in the development of energy storage capacities, including the commissioning of the first large-scale storage facility and the goal of reaching an installed capacity of 200 MWh in a short period of time.

“Investments in storage and flexibility are essential to strengthen our energy resilience,” said Dorin Junghietu.

Another topic of discussion was the security of supply of petroleum products in the context of volatile international markets. The minister emphasized the need for close coordination with the European Union, noting that “the EU’s energy security is not limited to the Union’s borders, and Moldova should be part of this joint effort”. He also emphasized the importance of Moldova’s inclusion in the relevant European mechanisms, especially in the field of aviation fuel.

US investments increase energy security

During a meeting with US Ambassador to the EU Andrei Puzder, Minister Dorin Junghietu expressed gratitude for the constant support provided by Washington.

“We are grateful for the strong partnership with the United States and the opportunities that energy cooperation offers for Moldova and the entire region. Access to diversified energy resources, including liquefied natural gas from the United States, directly contributes to reducing dependence on traditional imported sources and enhancing economic competitiveness,” the Minister said.

The discussions also focused on the development of the Vertical Gas Corridor, with the Minister emphasizing Moldova’s support in facilitating the flow of liquefied natural gas from the USA to the entire region.

In this context, the potential of developing an investment project in the south of the country, which could use the American gas for the production of electricity, including for export to Ukraine, was mentioned.

Prospects for cooperation in nuclear energy, including small modular reactors, as well as the potential for developing geothermal energy were also discussed.

“We want to use new technologies and develop strategic partnerships that will contribute to diversifying the energy balance and strengthening long-term security,” the minister emphasized.
