Tatiana Popa, Deputy Director General of the National Social Insurance Fund, presented figures which, she said, are not offered by the authorities in many European countries:
“The childbirth allowance is 21,350 lei, which is more than a thousand euros. You won’t find such allowances in many European countries. The child allowance until the child turns 3 is 3,937 lei per month, depending on the parents’ choice. We have the option to provide payments for 12 months, 2 months, or 3 years.”
It was also noted that the legislation has been amended, and parents now have the option to work while receiving the benefit. In addition, the regulations have been adjusted so that benefits for families with children can be calculated, at their discretion, based on the higher salary. If the father’s salary is higher, the benefit can be calculated based on his income. Consequently, benefit amounts have increased significantly in recent times.
“We truly care for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova from the moment they are in their mother’s womb, so to speak, and provide maternity benefits. Then there are other types of payments to support families with children. And I want to say that, when compared with other countries in the region, these benefits are quite generous compared to other types of payments provided to other categories of citizens,” clarified Tatiana Popa.
Such Different Statistics
In turn, Dumitriu Pîslaru, Secretary General of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, noted that the employment rate has risen from 50% to 57% over the past four years “thanks to a vast number of implemented policies”:
“And it has grown particularly among women thanks to the programs implemented, including childcare programs, flexible maternity leave, and so on. We have a vast array of implemented policies, and this, above all, has led to a reduction in the state social insurance budget deficit,” Pîslaru stated.
Today, 842,000 people contribute to the social insurance budget; over the course of a single fiscal year, the number of contributors has increased by approximately 15,000. According to the authorities, the ratio of contributors to pensioners is 1.2 contributors per pensioner.
As Logos Press previously reported, 22,100 children were born in Moldova last year—approximately 1,500 fewer (or 6.6%) compared to 2024.
