The union is taking this step in protest against the wage reform implemented by the Romanian government, which has resulted in “severe consequences for the incomes and rights of workers in the health care and social services sectors.”
The government of Ilie Bolojan has cut payments for staff, hazardous working conditions, and weekend work; reduced meal allowances for doctors; revised the formula for determining salary amounts; and so on.
“SANITAS confirms that this decision is a direct consequence of the government’s lack of response and dialogue, and warns of the consequences that the continuation of this policy will have for the healthcare system and for the Federation’s nearly 100,000 members,” union officials stated.
Earlier, on June 3, more than 10,000 medical and healthcare workers from Bucharest and other regions gathered for a protest in the Romanian capital against the new wage law, which, they say, will result in lower pay for many.
