Which countries invest the most in innovation?

Israel invests the largest share of its GDP in innovation—6.3%. The country also regularly ranks as the world leader in the number of startups per capita. Liechtenstein ranks second in terms of the share of GDP spent on research and development projects—about 6%—while South Korea ranks third, at 5%.

Taiwan (3.8% of GDP), Sweden (3.6%), and the United States (3.5%) also ranked among the world’s top innovation leaders this year.

According to UNESCO, global investment in R&D has grown steadily in recent years. In 2023, such spending accounted for 1.92% of global GDP, compared to 1.71% in 2015.
