The proposals call for the elimination of most tariffs on a range of industrial and agricultural goods from the United States. At the same time, the documents include additional safeguards for European producers of these goods.
For consumers, the changes may go almost unnoticed. However, for international trade companies, the new conditions mean easier market access for goods and a reduction in some trade barriers, notes the Latvian publication bb.lv.
In addition, the document establishes the conditions for applying preferential tariffs on steel and aluminum products and defines the circumstances under which the agreement may be suspended.
It is also proposed to extend the current zero-tariff regime for imports of certain types of lobsters from the United States.
One of the key elements of the agreement is the so-called sunset clause. It stipulates that the tariff preferences will remain in effect until the end of 2029, unless the parties agree to extend them earlier.
Following approval by the European Parliament, the documents will require final approval by the Council of the EU.
Upon official publication, the new rules will enter into force the very next day.
