The SB-AMTI (Space-Based Advanced Moving Target Indicator) system is designed as an interconnected system that integrates space-based sensors, secure communications links, and ground-based data processing to enable greater collaboration within the government’s space industrial base.

The Trump administration’s flagship Golden Dome missile defense system has multiple layers, one of which is the detection and tracking layer. Satellites are expected to play a role in tracking missiles, Reuters reported.

The Golden Dome initiative seeks to expand ground-based interceptors, sensors and control systems and add space-based satellites to detect, track and potentially counter airborne threats, including the still-discussed weapons in orbit.

The Space Force said this SB-AMTI supplier pool includes several companies, including SpaceX , and several competitions will be announced next year.

“This initial contract is expected to deploy a constellation of satellites by 2028, providing the Joint Force with the ability to eliminate operational blind spots early,” the statement said.

Earlier this week, the Space Force awarded SpaceX, which plans to reach a market capitalization of more than $1.75 trillion in its initial public offering, a $2.29 billion contract to build a secure, high-speed satellite communications network to connect military sensors and weapons platforms around the world.

The cost of the Golden Dome missile defense system rose to $185 billion, a $10 billion increase that will accelerate the development of key space capabilities, as the program director announced in March.
