According to the developers, the beta test is scheduled to launch in June 2026, with users already able to sign up for the waiting list. The project states that it relies on “real users” and reduces the number of bots through mandatory identity verification.
A private project, not an EU initiative
The initiative was first unveiled in January 2026 at the World Economic Forum in Davos and is positioned as a private European technology project, not a European Union initiative.
According to the company’s statement, W Social will operate under EU law, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and user data will be stored on infrastructure in Europe, DW reported.
The developers emphasize that the goal of the project is to create a social platform focused on trust and transparency, where each account belongs to a verified person.
Emphasis on user identification
According to DW, one of the key elements of the concept is the requirement to confirm identity when registering. At the same time, according to the project description, anonymous or pseudonymous accounts may be kept in a limited form to allow for user expression amid the risk of censorship in individual countries.
The launch of W Social fits into a broader discussion about Europe’s “digital sovereignty” and reducing dependence on American and Chinese technology platforms.
Experts note that the social media market is characterized by high concentration and strong network effects, which makes it extremely difficult for new players to enter the global level even if they have technological advantages.
