In a post on platform X, the billionaire wrote, “Try an early beta version of Grok Build (creates pretty much anything) and let us know what needs to be improved. It would be greatly appreciated.”
At issue is a new CLI (command line interface) tool that xAI is positioning as an “agent-based” system for writing code, building applications, and automating workflows using artificial intelligence.
However, the discussion in social networks quickly shifted from the technological capabilities of the product to its high cost: only subscribers of the SuperGrok Heavy tariff, which costs about $300 per month, got access to the service.
Later, Musk once again separately asked users to suggest improvements: “Please list in the comments the most important features that need to be improved, fixed or added”.
He also specified that the system uses vim keys by default, an important detail for professional developers.
The main controversy is the subscription price
Although a part of users positively evaluated the launch, the main focus of the discussion was the cost of access to the service.
One user wrote: “I’m not going to pay $300 a month for this”. Another criticized the closed access to the product: “It turns out that all the computing power of premium subscribers goes to this. The rich get a new toy, and the rest of us are left with nothing.
That said, there were some positive reviews. User HaLim Codez noted, “Finally. Been waiting for this for a long time. Grok Build is already running very smoothly. The vim support is a great solution.
Market assesses prospects
Market participants are still trying to assess whether Grok Build will become a full-fledged competitor to OpenAI and Anthropic tools. They note that the launch of Grok Build could mean that xAI is trying to gain a foothold in one of the fastest growing segments of generative AI – the market of AI tools for software development.
Right now, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft are actively competing for this audience. The main market trend is the transition from ordinary chatbots to “agent-based” AI systems capable of independently performing chains of tasks: writing code, testing applications, managing workflows, and automating routine operations.
Against this background, xAI is betting on two factors at once – deep integration of Grok into the X ecosystem and creation of a professional tool for developers.
However, the high price of access may become a limitation for mass distribution of the product. Users are already comparing xAI’s subscription price with more affordable solutions from competitors, primarily Claude and ChatGPT.
At the same time, for xAI, the launch of Grok Build may mean an attempt to transform Grok from an experimental AI bot into a full-fledged platform for professional development.
