Italy’s Eni wants to raise €1 bln in LNG projects amid rising gas demand in Europe

Energy group Eni is in talks with international investment funds to raise more than €1 billion for floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. The deal reflects Europe's desire to strengthen energy security and diversify gas supplies after reducing dependence on Russian fuel.

According to Reuters, Eni is discussing possible participation in projects with Apollo, KKR and Stonepeak funds. This involves the development of floating LNG capacities, primarily in Africa, which allow gas to be brought to the global market more quickly without the construction of large land-based terminals.

The Italian company has been actively expanding its LNG business in recent years, seeing it as one of the key sources of supply for Europe in an unstable global energy market. Following the 2022 energy crisis, EU countries accelerated investments in alternative routes and sources of gas, including supplies from Africa, the US and the Middle East.

Why this is important for Europe and Moldova

Strengthening LNG infrastructure is also important for Eastern European countries, including Moldova. Our country is fully dependent on the stability of the regional gas market and supplies through the European infrastructure, including Romania.

The expansion of European LNG projects potentially reduces the risks of gas shortages and increases supply flexibility in the region. At the same time, the growing investment in LNG shows that Europe, despite the development of renewable energy, continues to view natural gas as an important element of energy security and a transitional energy mix.

Analysts note that the interest of large funds in LNG also reflects expectations of long-term gas demand from the industrial and power generation sectors in Europe.

However, Reuters emphasizes that all the companies in question have so far refrained from commenting.
