In particular, the infection of domestic pigs with plague was detected in Costeşti (Ialoveni). Dogs in Criuleni and Hincesti districts were infected with rabies.
The Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) states that “the irresponsibility of some citizens increases the risk of spreading outbreaks of African swine fever”.
Thus, at the beginning of May, the territorial unit in Ialoveni received a report about the discovery of animal corpses near Costeşti. ANSA veterinarians found two corpses of domestic pigs weighing more than 100 kg each “irresponsibly abandoned in an orchard”.
The Inspectorate General of Police, the Environmental Inspectorate and the local administration were immediately notified of the incident. Tissue samples of the dead animals were also taken for laboratory examination, the corpses were buried, and extensive disinfection measures were carried out in the area.
Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of African swine fever virus in the samples taken. After the outbreak was confirmed, surveillance and control measures were introduced in Ialoveni and Hincesti districts, located in the monitoring zone. In particular, it was restricted: the movement of pigs from commercial farms; the sale of live pigs and pork from households, including in agri-food markets. Mandatory weekly testing of animals on commercial farms throughout the country and screening of wild boar populations were also introduced.
