The house has undergone energy saving works such as waterproofing of the foundation, thermal insulation of the walls with mineral wool and insulation of the roof. These measures helped to reduce heat loss and maintain a stable temperature.
While the family used to consume about 12 m3 of firewood per heating season, now this amount has been almost halved and this winter has been much more comfortable.
For a large family where daily expenses are significant, these savings really do radically improve the family budget.
Especially since the work to improve the energy efficiency of the house cost the Kitik family relatively inexpensively.
They were completed in a short time, about a month, with 50% funding from the European Union and the German government and 45% coverage from the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund. The family’s own contribution amounted to 5% of the total cost.
As of February 2026, the cost per storehouse of firewood in Moldova ranged from 650 to 1200 lei, depending on the type of wood.
