On Tuesday, May 5, the parliament will hold hearings on the phenomenon of academic misconduct, in particular the sale of custom-made diploma and term papers in the higher education system. The initiative belongs to the parliamentary commission for culture, education, research, youth, sports and media, and is aimed at strengthening academic integrity and increasing the transparency of the educational system. The authorities invite all interested parties to participate.
The topic gained additional resonance after Education and Research Minister Dan Perchun announced the launch of a probe following a journalistic investigation into the purchase of diploma papers. He strongly condemned such practices.
“Academic fraud is a cancerous tumor that destroys the trust and prestige of higher education in Moldova. We will appeal to the law enforcement authorities so that the perpetrators are brought to justice. If necessary, we will insist on prompt amendments to the legislation,” the minister said.
It should be reminded that starting from this year, all diploma theses in Moldova will be compulsorily checked with the help of a single software to detect plagiarism. This was announced by the State Secretary of the Education and Research Ministry, Adriana Cazacu-Tigae. The measure is part of the policy to strengthen academic integrity, which is considered one of the state’s priorities.
