Traffic accidents reached the lowest level in 13 years

Moldovan authorities have noted positive dynamics in road safety. In the first four months of this year, the police registered the lowest number of road accidents in the last 13 years - 510 cases for the period January 1 - May 1, 2026. It is expected that with the adoption of a new digital register of road accidents, the situation with the analysis and prevention of accidents will become even more effective.

There is also a slight decrease in the number of people killed in road accidents, with 47 people killed in accidents, compared to 49 in the same period last year.

In comparison, 2015 remains one of the worst years in the last decade, with 767 crashes and 887 casualties recorded then during the same period. The highest number of fatalities were recorded in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

The police note that despite the positive dynamics, the main causes of road accidents remain unchanged: speeding, inappropriate speed for weather conditions, driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to give advantage to pedestrians.

Traffic accident records are being fully digitalized

At a meeting on Wednesday, April 29, the government approved the Concept of the information system “State Register of Road Traffic Accidents” and the Regulations for its maintenance. This decision introduces a single mechanism for collecting, storing and analyzing data on road accidents.

The document also provides for the modernization of the accident registration system through full digitalization of processes, integration with other state registers and platforms, as well as the transfer of statistical data to the European Commission. The main objective is to improve data quality, comply with EU standards and strengthen road accident prevention measures.
