According to the head of the government, Moldova’s problem is extremely low labor productivity, one of the lowest in Europe. At the same time, he emphasized that this challenge can also be an opportunity. Even reaching the minimum efficiency level of the European Union countries, he estimated, can ensure an economic growth of up to 51% solely by increasing productivity.

“We have the highest per capita number of Harvard, Ivy League and top U.S. university graduates, and our fellow citizens are doing very well abroad. Why can’t we organize here? I think we’re missing something… If you look at the CEOs of the biggest companies in the world, you know who’s at the top of the list? Indians. Either Americans or Frenchmen of Indian origin. But India itself as a country of origin is not doing very well. Why? I think it has to do with structural problems,” the prime minister said.

He also emphasized the need for a balance between social policies and economic efficiency, stressing on reforms and improving competitiveness:

“I believe that we should think about how to become more efficient. Of course we have to take care of vulnerable people, of course we have to have inclusive policies, of course we have to take care of everybody, but at the same time we have to be more efficient, better and more competitive than others.”

As for the May 1 holiday, Munteanu made it clear that he considers it a historical legacy of the socialist era:

“The May 1 holiday, let’s face it, is a holiday from the time of socialism/communism, which was invented by the Americans. Americans forgot about it and we continue to celebrate it and we have it as a day off. Maybe it’s a day to reflect and reflect on what we’ve accomplished.”
