The native of the village of Kopcak in the autonomy won a silver medal at the European Senior Championships in Tirana, Albania, last week, and before that in March this year he became the European Under-23 champion.

For the March triumph of the young wrestler, the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, not without scandal, decided to allocate a 300 thousand lei prize to Alexandru Gaidarli. But even then, the Executive Committee of Gagauzia was against this decision.

And the other day, a statement of claim signed by the first deputy head of the Executive Committee of Gagauzia, Ilya Uzun, was published in social networks, reports Gagauzinfo. The document states that the decision of the People’s Assembly to allocate 300 thousand lei to Alexandru Gaidarly as an award for outstanding sports achievements “contradicts the current legislation”.

The statement of claim was sent to the court in Comrat.

The statement of claim caused a storm of indignation in social networks, the newspaper said. The position of the Executive Committee was resented by PAG deputies, sports functionaries, as well as many ordinary citizens. They believe that the sportsman glorifies Gagauzia and Moldova as a whole with his successes, so he deserves the award. The different branches of the autonomy should find a compromise in this delicate issue and not make the sportsman a hostage of political games.
