It will be part of a large regional water supply system that will provide water to more than 800,000 residents of Chisinau, as well as the districts of Straseni and Calarasi.
The new project is financed by a €14 million grant from the German government through KfW Bank. The rest of the funds will be provided by the Government of Moldova (€7.6 million) and the Chisinau Municipality Mayor’s Office (€2 million) under the coordination of the Regional Development Agency Center.
The system will improve water quality and volume
The main part of the investment will be directed to the construction of a latest generation water intake station capable of supplying a 52 km long main line. The system will connect the capital with the region’s towns and villages by the end of 2026.
The infrastructure being built will focus not only on the volume and, as promised, the quality of water, but also on the safety of the system in extreme weather conditions.
The technical superiority of the new water intake station is, its developers emphasize, that it will be flood-proof. The station will have double intake channels that will make it resistant to climate change, preventing sediment and contaminants from entering the system.
In addition to the engineering works, the project also includes institutional modernization of the Apă-Canal Chișinău enterprise. For this, the project managers will allocate 1 million euros. It is expected that these investments will be able to guarantee water management according to European standards.
