This is India’s border areas with Bangladesh and Pakistan, where the complex topography – rivers, lowlands and hills – makes traditional methods of control difficult, writes The Hindu. The memo sent to the units suggests assessing how effectively deploying such animals can help in preventing illegal border crossings and other illegal activities.

The initiative is said to be linked to Home Minister Amit Shah’s directives. However, it is still only a matter of analyzing the idea and not its implementation.

The annual report of the Indian Home Ministry emphasizes that securing the border with Bangladesh faces a number of challenges: complex geography, proximity of populated areas, land alienation issues and local protests. Despite the construction of new fences, some areas remain vulnerable.

Sources in the security agencies note that the reptile project raises many questions, from how to acquire them to the possible impact on the population of border areas. So far, the decision is still at the discussion stage and requires additional evaluation.
