“This period was marked by an unprecedented fact. In 2025, data on the purchase price of natural gas were concealed for a whole year,” Filat wrote in his tg channel.

Today, based on the official data published late, we can calculate that in 2025, the overpayment amounted to $104 million compared to the average European prices.

In 2025, natural gas prices on the European and world markets started to decrease. In Moldova, on the contrary, the purchase price increased. The deviation from the European average reached about 26%, which is a serious anomaly that should have triggered the regulator’s intervention.

It was at this point that the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) decided to stop publishing data on the purchase price of gas, eliminating transparency and public scrutiny. In the absence of these data, it became easier to shift the financial burden to the population.

“In any functioning energy system, the purchase price is the key element of the tariff – not distribution, not VAT and not administrative costs,” the former prime minister argues.

The figures are unambiguous: $104 million is equivalent to about 2 lei per cubic meter. This is how much each consumer overpaid in 2025. The tariff should have been reduced as of January 1, 2025, and in 2026 it should have been reduced even more, to the level of about 12.3 lei per cubic meter, including VAT. Instead, citizens have only now received a “discount” to 14.42 lei per cubic meter.

In total, according to Filat’s calculations, the country’s residents have overpaid $544 million for gas over three years.
