The first gold of the day was won by American skier Brezie Johnson. She won the downhill event.

Unfortunately, a terrible injury in this discipline was suffered by the legendary American Lindsey Vonn, who fell at the very beginning of the downhill. The 41-year-old athlete started after a recent rupture of the cruciate ligaments of the knee. But she really wanted to start at another Olympics – her debut was back in 2010 in Vancouver.

Another winter sports legend – Norwegian skier Johannes Clabo won a gold medal in the skiathlon. Thus, he equaled Russian skier Lyubov Egorova in the number of gold medals at the Olympics – six each.

Only two other Norwegian ski racing legends – Bjorn Daly and Marit Bjorgen – are ahead of them with eight gold medals each.

In the parallel giant slalom, Czech snowboarder Zuzana Maderova and Austrian Benjamin Karl took first place.

The French biathlon team won gold medals in the mixed relay.

Champions and medalists in speed skating (men’s 5000 m), luge (men’s singles), and figure skating (team event) will be determined in the evening of February 8.
