This is a section on the M3 highway “Chisinau-Comrat-Djurgiulesti – border with Romania. The Ukrainian road builders put this facility into operation three months earlier than the contractually agreed deadline, claiming that the quality of the completed work was not affected by the early delivery.
The National Agency of Roads of Moldova (AND) noted that the works on the bypass started in August 2023 and were completed ahead of schedule due to the contractor’s efficient actions.
The opening of such a road is an important event for Moldova. According to AND General Director Stefan Popa, the city of Vulcanesti has for many years experienced a daily negative impact on traffic safety, infrastructure and quality of life of residents due to the heavy traffic flow.
“The opening of the bypass road means increased safety, traffic relief and shorter travel times to the south of the country, as well as improved connectivity between the capital, the customs point and the Giurgiulesti port,” Stefan Popa said.
In addition, the 8.5 km long bypass road past Vulcanesti has not only contributed to accelerated logistics of commercial goods, but also to the ecology of the city.
The project included not only the construction of the bypass road itself, but also the construction of access roads, a bridge, drainage systems, lighting, road signs and the implementation of road safety measures in line with European standards.
More than 320 thousand m³ of earthworks for the construction of slopes and more than 65 thousand m³ of embankments were carried out. More than 38 thousand tons of asphalt concrete were laid and more than 96 thousand m³ of cement-treated mixtures were used. Almost 5 km of barrier fencing and 186 road signs were installed.
The Moldovan Transport Ministry noted that the M3 highway is the shortest highway to Giurgiulesti, where the port provides access to the Danube and the Black Sea. At the same time, the M3 is an integral part of the European corridor E577 Poltava-Kirovograd-Kishinev-Giurgiulesti-Galats-Slobozia.
Vulcanesti is located 200 km from Chisinau, 7 km from the border with Ukraine and 35 km from the border with Romania, which gives the facility a strategic importance in the south of the Republic of Moldova.
The works on this important facility were financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
