As a consequence, experts predict that the area of winter wheat sown for the harvest-2026 in Moldova is unlikely to exceed 300 thousand hectares, which is much less than last year.
According to Boris Boincian, head of the Department of Farming Systems at the National Center for Research and Seed Production of Moldova, the reasonable sowing period for winter wheat in the weather conditions of this year expires in mid-November. And this is adjusted for the fact that the first half of this month was almost “ideal Moldovan autumn” – relatively warm and humid. This encouraged farmers, who had time to harvest sunflower and corn, to sow winter wheat on the released fields.
Theoretically, some of the late sown winter crops will have time to thrive before the winter cold. But most of them are guaranteed not to reach the optimal phase of development before “entering winter”. If the winter turns out to be early, snowless and frosty, and the spring – late, a significant part of weak crops will die out.
According to statistical data, 387.6 thousand ha (+6% to the corresponding figure for 2024) were planted with winter wheat in Moldova for the harvest-2025.
