In the same period last year, the average price of wheat exported from Moldova amounted to 3.57 lei/kg, while in the same months of 2023 – 3.63 lei/kg.

Agro-marketing expert Iurie Rija believes: “The decline in wheat prices in the first quarter of the 2025-26 marketing season has a more complex explanation than just the downward dynamics of the world market. In the current season, the problem of lower grain quality and, partly, a change in the geography of grain supplies played a decisive role.”

One of the grain quality parameters of the new crop has played an important role in the current season, namely the low value of the W coefficient, an indicator that measures the stretchability and elasticity of dough during the baking process. This parameter, which until recently had not been closely monitored in Moldova, unexpectedly became the cause of complaints against Moldovan wheat shipments by some European buyers. As a result, Moldovan exporters of this commodity were forced to accept lower prices in order to remain competitive on the markets of some EU countries.

In the period from July to October inclusive, Moldova exported 523 thousand tons of wheat, which is 21% more than in the same period last year (432 thousand tons), but 11% less than in the same months of 2023 (585 thousand tons). Unexpectedly, the list of the largest buyers of Moldovan wheat in the first months of the current marketing season was headed by Italy (41% of the total volume of wheat exports from Moldova).
