Cheerful start of Moldovan wrestlers at the Youth World Cup

Greco-Roman wrestlers Vitaly Yeremenko and Alexander Solovey became medalists of the World Youth Olympic Wrestling Championships, held in Novi Sad (Serbia), - reports Logos Press.

Vitaly Eryomenko won a silver medal in the weight category up to 63 kg. On his way to the final, the 21-year-old athlete defeated Nurdaulet Kapas (Kazakhstan), Jan Erik Gamelius (Sweden), Adham Alman Elsayed (Egypt), and in the semifinals – Kuttubek Abdurazakov from Kyrgyzstan.

In the decisive bout the representative of Azerbaijan Ziya Babashov won over the Moldovan wrestler with the score 6:3. The bronze medal winners were Elsayed and Russian Dorji Shungurtsikov, who competed under a neutral flag.

Earlier this year, Yeromenko won bronze medals at his debut World and European Senior Championships. He is also the world youth champion (2024), European youth champion (2025) and European youth vice-champion (2024).

The second medal for the Moldovan national Greco-Roman wrestling team was brought by 21-year-old Alexandru Solovei, who competed in the category up to 77 kg. In the qualification round he defeated Nurel Duishonbekov from Kyrgyzstan, but in the 1/8 finals he was defeated in a bout with Georgian Temuri Ordzhonikidze.

Solovey had an opportunity to rehabilitate himself in the additional qualification round, during which he scored two victories – over Carl Edwin Buff (Sweden) and Aidan McElhinney (Ireland). The bronze medal was won in the small final, in which the Moldovan wrestler defeated Doniyorkhon Nakibov from Kyrgyzstan.

Irfan Mirzoev, representing Ukraine, became the world champion in this weight category. Ordzhonikidze won the silver medal and the second bronze medal was won by Levente Levi (Hungary).

During his sports career Alexander Solovey became European Champion among youth (2025), among athletes under 20 years old (2023), vice-champion of Europe among athletes under 20 years old (2022-2024) and bronze medalist of the European championship

After the first two days of the tournament, Moldovan Greco-Roman wrestlers occupy the fifth place among 44 participating countries. Above our national team are the national teams of Iran, Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

The World Olympic Wrestling Championship will last until October 27. Moldova is represented by 21 athletes. The Greco-Roman wrestling team of 10 athletes went under the leadership of Roman Dermenzhi, freestyle wrestlers are coached by Mihail Cucul, and girls – by Andrei Chiperi.
