Multilingualism will be introduced in schools of national minorities

From 2025, some subjects in minority schools will be taught in Romanian using the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology, Logos Press reported.

Multilingualism will be introduced in schools of national minorities

The Ministry of Education and Research has approved a plan for the implementation of multilingual education in national minority schools. An action plan for the implementation of multilingual education in such schools for 2025-2030 has also been developed.

In the models proposed by the Ministry, Romanian is gradually introduced as the language of instruction for non-language subjects, from the earliest education, i.e. from kindergartens.

In gymnasium classes, the teaching load carried out in Romanian will have to be at least 20% of the total weekly teaching hours, excluding those allocated to the study of languages as separate subjects. The choice of non-language subjects taught in two languages is made by the educational institution, taking into account the availability of qualified staff, educational resources and with the consent of the parents.

In lyceum classes, the recommended teaching time in Romanian should be at least 30% of the total weekly teaching load of students, also excluding the hours allocated to the study of languages as separate subjects.

The Action Plan for the period 2025-2030 provides for the development and implementation of adapted educational materials, teacher training in CLIL methodology and monitoring of the quality of the educational process. By 2030, it is expected that 90% of schools with instruction in the language of national minorities will use materials for teaching in Romanian.

A piloting phase is planned for 2025-2027. The approved provisions will be applied and evaluated in selected schools. The results of the analysis will serve as a basis for refining the mechanisms before scaling up the program at the national level.

“Thanks to this reform, students will receive a quality education that respects the country’s linguistic and cultural diversity, promoting inclusiveness and peaceful coexistence,” – the Ministry of Education and Research said in a document.

The CLIL method was introduced in Moldova about 10 years ago. The first teachers were introduced to it through international projects and training internships, in particular in cooperation with the University “Dunărea de Jos” from the city of Galati (Romania).
