
Prior to this position, Ulrich Schmitt was Operations Manager for Myanmar and Thailand, based in Bangkok, overseeing the World Bank office in both countries. With over 20 years of bank experience, he specializes in agricultural economics and natural resource management.
Schmitt’s background includes serving as Lead Economist in the WB’s Europe and Central Asia Department in Washington, DC, as Program Manager for Sustainable Development in Sri Lanka and the Maldives in Colombo, and as Senior Natural Resources Economist in Beijing, China. Schmitt holds a doctorate in natural resource management from the Technical University of Munich.
“I am honored to represent the World Bank Group in Moldova, where I will actively work with the public and private sectors to find solutions to create jobs, improve human capital, and enhance Moldova’s competitiveness,” Mr. Schmitt said on the occasion of his appointment.
The current objectives of the WB Group’s partnership program in Moldova reflect a unified approach with the authorities’ activities to support sustainable development and progress towards European Union membership, as well as efforts to build capacity to digitize public and private sector systems and institutions.
