Donald Trump, President of the United States of America
“Duties of 80% on China look reasonable!” – he wrote on May 9 on his Truth Social platform.
The statement came amid preparations for talks with Beijing, for which U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will arrive in Switzerland on May 10.
Now there are duties of up to 145% on Chinese goods – they were introduced by Trump after his return to the White House in January. Now the US President is showing willingness to adjust this tough policy. In doing so, Trump has also made demands of Beijing.
“China should open its market to the US – it would be so good for them! Closed markets don’t work anymore!” – he believes.
Analysts expect that the upcoming talks in Switzerland could be the first step toward de-escalation in the trade standoff between the world’s two largest economies.
