The share of renewable energy is growing

Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camerai Prime Minister of Moldova Dorin Recean

The statement was made by Prime Minister Dorin Recean during a meeting with Francesco La Camera, director general of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The prime minister emphasized that over the last years, Moldova has taken concrete steps to increase the share of green energy in the total consumption.

“Renewable energy production capacities have increased eight times, reaching almost 650 MW. And we will soon add another 165 MW thanks to the recently concluded auction. This means that now, on days with favorable weather conditions, up to 30% of the energy consumed in Moldova comes from renewable sources, which was previously set for 2030. For comparison, in 2020, green energy accounted for only 3% of the consumption,” the government’s press service quoted the prime minister as saying.

Dorin Recean also said that Moldova needs more transparency in order to attract investments in the renewable energy sector: “We need more competitiveness and involvement of more external participants in the launched purchases. This fall, we will launch a tender for the construction of wind farms with energy storage systems. This will allow us to make the grid more stable and efficient.”

For his part, IRENA’s Director General said that the use of renewable energy and the interconnection of energy systems play an increasingly important role in ensuring energy security, especially in states affected by the geopolitical context.
