Americans are now prohibited from purchasing and installing certain types of foreign equipment and software, as well as digital components that could be used for cyberattacks.
The ban covers high-voltage transformers, inverters for solar panels and batteries, generators, relay protection devices, and other smart electronic devices.
“The White House has called it an ‘unprecedented and extraordinary external threat’ posed by foreign mass power supply systems that could create vulnerabilities to national security,” Reuters reports.
The U.S. Department of Energy has been tasked with determining the conditions for the continued use of already-installed foreign equipment and taking measures to eliminate potential threats. Washington’s decision marks another step in the fight against technological risks that U.S. authorities associate, among other things, with China.
