The new foreign exchange rules will make life easier for the diaspora

The regulation allowing residents to conduct, without authorization from the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), various types of foreign exchange transactions totaling up to 100,000 euros, compared to the current limit of 10,000 euros, which was approved today by the government, will make life easier for the diaspora. The statement was made by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan.

“By the way, I’m glad this measure is being adopted, because it greatly simplifies life for the diaspora as well. We’ve been hearing these complaints—you know, about how hard it is to come here, to deposit money in a bank, and all the questions about money laundering. So here we’re raising the threshold for certain notifications, and this will certainly simplify things in cases where, for example, someone from the diaspora wants to bring money home… it’s definitely a step toward simplification, and I can only welcome it,” Tofan said.

The draft amendment to the legislation on foreign exchange regulation was presented by Finance Minister Victoria Belous. According to her, the draft provides for the simplification of foreign exchange procedures and an increase in the threshold above which authorization from the National Bank of Moldova is required, from 10,000 to 100,000 euros, and, as of January 1, 2028, to 250,000 euros for transactions conducted by residents in foreign currency.

The draft also provides for granting currency exchange offices the right to provide payment services, with a view to increasing financial inclusion among the population, as well as the elimination of the authorization requirement for residents to open accounts at foreign banks while residing abroad.
