A former senior partner at the Horizon Capital investment fund recalled that in 2017, the fund owned 64% of Purcari and had two purchase offers on the table, both from Russian funds, valued at approximately $60 million.
“I said I wouldn’t be the one to sell Purcari to the Russians, so we chose to list the company on the stock exchange,” he said in an interview with the Romanian publication Ziarul Financiar.
At the time, the decision was met with skepticism, as no Moldovan company had ever been listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange before. However, in February 2018, Purcari went public with a market capitalization of about $100 million.
According to him, Purcari’s experience demonstrates that companies from the Republic of Moldova can gain access to international capital markets and attract investment using modern financial instruments.
“We would like to see many more Moldovan companies listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange. We’re talking about dual listings, since we now have an extension of the BVB in Chisinau. We want issuers from Moldova to be represented on both exchanges,” he said.
He believes that the convergence of the capital markets of Romania and the Republic of Moldova could create new opportunities for local entrepreneurs by providing companies with access to capital and increasing their regional visibility.
The prime minister stated that he aims to apply the principles used in the private sector—efficiency, prioritization of tasks, and a results-oriented approach—to the public sector. He is confident that a stable parliamentary majority will enable him to achieve these goals.
“I understand that the state is a much more complex machine than a corporation, but I believe we can achieve a great deal. We have unity in parliament, we have a ruling party, we have a coalition, we have political support for reforms, we have a strong team in the government, and I intend to channel this energy into bringing about change in Moldova,” the prime minister said.
