The Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi, a model
The new museum, designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, will be the largest in the international Guggenheim network, which includes museums in New York, Bilbao, and Venice. The construction cost has not been officially disclosed.
The opening reinforces Saadiyat Island’s position as the Middle East’s leading cultural hub. In recent years, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, and the Abu Dhabi Museum of Natural History have already opened here. Together, these projects are part of the UAE’s long-term strategy to develop cultural tourism, the creative economy, and attract international investment.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, called the museum’s opening a “turning point” in the emirate’s cultural development. According to him, the new museum will serve as a platform for education, creativity, and international cultural exchange.
The complex includes 30 galleries connected by a central atrium, more than 11,600 square meters of indoor exhibition space, and approximately 23,000 square meters of outdoor areas. The permanent exhibition will be dedicated to contemporary art from the second half of the 20th century and the 21st century, with a special focus on artists from West Asia, North Africa, and South Asia. The works will be presented thematically rather than chronologically, which will highlight the connections between different cultures and artistic movements.
Project Director Stephanie Rosenthal noted that the museum’s development was the result of many years of work by an international team that brought together specialists from a wide variety of countries and professional fields.
The opening of the Guggenheim will be one of the key events on the global art calendar in 2026. As early as November, Abu Dhabi will host the international Frieze Abu Dhabi art fair for the first time, strengthening its position in the global art market.
The museum’s launch comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. In the spring, the military conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran disrupted plans for a number of cultural events, including Art Dubai, which opened later than scheduled and in a scaled-down format. Despite this, UAE authorities continue to invest in large-scale cultural projects, viewing them as a tool for strengthening the emirate’s international standing and developing the tourism industry.
