Google Play has removed the VK, Mail.ru, Odnoklassniki, and Max apps

The apps of VK, Russia's largest internet holding company—including its social networks, email services, and the "Max" messenger—are no longer available for download from the Google Play Store for Android devices. Previously, some of these Russian services had also been removed from the App Store.

The restrictions followed the inclusion of VK and the parent company of the “Max” messaging app on the European Union’s sanctions list, RBC notes.

The social media apps “VKontakte” and “Odnoklassniki,” the “Max” messaging app, the Mail.ru email service, and other services within the VK ecosystem have disappeared from Google Play. The list of unavailable apps includes “Zen,” “Yula,” “VK Video,” “VK Music,” “VK Messenger,” “VK Dating,” “Marusya,” “VK Clips,” and “VK Mail.”

VK stated that previously installed apps continue to function normally. Users retain access to the services, including the ability to receive notifications. The company also reported that the apps are available in alternative Android app stores, including RuStore, Samsung Galaxy Store, and Xiaomi GetApps.

According to a source, Google has not yet commented on the reasons for removing the Russian apps from its store. RBC has sent a request to the company.

The removal occurred a few days after the European Union’s decision to add VK and the parent company of the “Max” messenger to its sanctions lists. The EU’s restrictions on Russian companies were expanded on July 13.

The situation with Google Play is a continuation of restrictions on Russian apps in foreign app stores. In early June, the “Max” messenger disappeared from the App Store, and in late June, Apple removed a number of VK services, including “Odnoklassniki,” “Zen,” “VK Video,” “VK Messenger,” “VK Music,” and “VK Dating.” Apple had previously explained the removal as compliance with sanctions requirements.

The Russian Ministry of Digital Development stated that it is in talks with Apple regarding the return of the “Max” messenger to the App Store. After the app was removed, the developers announced that iPhone users could access the service via the web version.

Amid this news, VK shares on the Moscow Exchange fell 7.78% on July 16, reaching 129.3 rubles per share ($1.65–1.66).

At the same time, VK announced the completion of its transition to the Russian domain vk.ru. The company stated that it would maintain access to its services exclusively within the .ru zone. Additionally, VK announced an agreement to sell the RuStore app store to its management.
