Yerevan Will Spend Half a Million Dollars on a “Water Frenzy”

The Yerevan City Hall has decided to celebrate Vardavar in grand style—the famous Armenian holiday during which the entire city turns into a massive “water frenzy” and passersby are doused with water en masse. A total of 199.5 million drams (more than $500,000) has been allocated to organize the festivities.

The holiday is celebrated 14 weeks after Easter; this year, it falls on July 12. According to News.am, citing News.5tv.am, the main events will take place on Republic Square, where the opening and closing ceremonies, a marathon, and a large concert program are scheduled.

Pagan Traditions and “Water Madness”

Vardavar is a colorful Armenian festival with deep pre-Christian roots. The main and most fun tradition of the day is large-scale water fights: passersby on the streets are doused with water, and even police officers can get soaked. According to Christian tradition, being doused with water symbolizes purification from sins, and the water itself is considered healing on this day.

During the Soviet era, Vardavar was hardly celebrated at all, but after the country gained independence, the tradition was revived, and it once again became the nation’s favorite folk festival. At the height of the festivities, even city services join in the fun by sending water trucks out onto the streets.

Tip for Tourists

Armeniadiscovery.com advises: if you happen to be in Yerevan on this day, be prepared for anything. Put your phone and wallet in a waterproof bag beforehand and just enjoy the experience.
