Tomac proposes a unified education system for Romania and the Republic of Moldova

Romanian Prime Minister-designate Eugen Tomac stated that Romania and the Republic of Moldova must move away from the mindset “we know each other, we respect each other, but we each have our own affairs” and develop “much bolder” projects, noting that the two countries should have “an integrated, practically identical education system.”

“Moldova will undoubtedly join the European Union. However, I want to do more for the citizens of Romania and Moldova, and I have three priorities here regarding our relations with the Republic of Moldova. I would very much like to reach an agreement as soon as possible on the creation of a common media space so that all media outlets, radio, and television in Romania have free access to the Moldovan market, and, conversely, the media of the Republic of Moldova have free access to the Romanian media market. This would significantly help the Republic of Moldova strengthen its resilience against the propaganda of the Russian Federation, which is very aggressive in the Republic of Moldova. “I also very much want to build strong bridges for future generations and create an integrated education system that is virtually identical in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, and this depends on the decision of the governments of both countries,” Evgheni Tomac said on Thursday on RFI Romania radio, according to Digi24.

He emphasized that such measures would complement the process of European integration and said he had already informed Chisinau of his intentions.

“I would like to hold joint academic competitions between students from Romania and the Republic of Moldova because, even though we are two independent states, Romanians make up the majority in both Romania and Moldova (according to Tomac, ed.), and, obviously, from this perspective, we have an obligation—both moral and institutional—to act in this direction. Finally, I would very much like to promote competitions and sporting events for federations in both countries, because I believe this area needs to be developed, and even to organize a Romania-Moldova Cup. “Therefore, in this regard, I propose moving away from the logic of: ‘We know each other, we respect each other, but we each have our own affairs.’ We must have the courage to move forward and develop much bolder projects, and that is my vision,” Tomac stated.

The prime minister-designate recalled that back in 2018, the Romanian Parliament adopted a resolution expressing the country’s readiness to discuss the issue of unification with the Republic of Moldova at any time, emphasizing that he is ready to lead this process.

“I will work every day toward this goal, toward bringing the two countries closer together, so that the citizens of Romania and the Republic of Moldova can get to know each other as well as possible and, of course, when they make a decision, have all the necessary conditions in place. We have a 2018 parliamentary resolution in which the Romanian state explicitly declares its readiness to discuss the scenario of the Republic of Moldova’s unification with Romania at any time when Chisinau is ready for it. And I say this openly and on the assumption that I am ready to lead this process,” Tomac stated.

It should be noted that Eugen Tomac holds dual citizenship—Romanian and Moldovan. He was born in the Ukrainian SSR but renounced his Ukrainian citizenship because dual citizenship is prohibited in that country.
