The State Tax Service has reported on the results of its efforts to identify and combat illegal economic activities by individuals. This phenomenon affects tax compliance and distorts fair competition in the business environment.
According to the tax service, in May 2026, violators were fined a total of 1,033,300 lei.
Illegal activities were identified to a greater extent in several sectors of the economy. Violations were most frequently encountered in the trade of goods, including through online platforms, in the provision of services to the public, as well as in the passenger transportation sector via taxis.
The National Tax Service notes that tax authorities impose fines ranging from 1,500 to 4,500 lei for illegal business activities.
All persons engaged in economic activities must be officially registered and comply with legal requirements, the State Tax Service emphasizes. Failure to meet these obligations results not only in sanctions but also in the loss of rights, such as access to social protection or pensions.
The National Tax Service provides support to all taxpayers, including new businesses, by offering information on how to conduct business activities in accordance with current legislation.
